Make sure you have gcj installed.

Install the libgcj debuginfo.  I did:

    sudo debuginfo-install libgcj

This will install an amazing amount of stuff.

Then write a simple java program, like:

public class q {
  public static void main(String[] args) {
    System.out.println("hi");
  }
}

Compile:

  gcj -g --main=q -o q q.java

Run gdb, "break q.main", "run".

On my machine this is enough to provoke the crash.
