This commit moves the shared code in {i386,amd64}-linux-nat.c
into the new files x86-linux-nat.[ch].  Additionally, a new
file i386-linux-nat.h was required to expose a value required
by the 32-bit code in x86-linux-nat.c.

This commit adds a new helper, x86_linux_get_thread_area, to
hold the common parts of the ps_get_thread_area functions in
i386-linux-nat.c and amd64-linux-nat.c.

Hi all,

This series refactors the shared code in {i386,amd64}-linux-nat.c into
the new files x86-linux-nat.[ch] and i386-linux-nat.h.  The first five
patches remove spurious changes between the files so that the code to
be shared is identical:

  1/7 - Rename identical functions
  2/7 - Merge {i386,amd64}_linux_read_description
  3/7 - Merge ps_get_thread_area
  4/7 - Pull out common parts of _initialize_{i386,amd64}_linux_nat
  5/7 - Comment and whitespace changes

The sixth patch moves the shared code into the new files and does all
the makefile and build system updates:

  6/7 - Move duplicated code into new files

The seventh patch tidies the blocks of #include directives at the
tops of {i386,amd64}-linux-nat.c:

  7/7 - Tidy #include lists

This final patch is not strictly necessary for the series, but it
makes things tidier.

This commit adds two new helpers, x86_linux_create_target
and x86_linux_register_target, to hold the parts of
_initialize_i386_linux_nat and _initialize_amd64_linux_nat
which are common.

amd64-linux-nat.c and i386-linux-nat.c contain a number of functions
which are identical but for prefix on their names.  This commit
renames all such functions to have the prefix x86_ instead of the
prefixes amd64_ or i386_ and updates all uses of those functions.

This commit tidies up the #include lists in {i386,amd64}-linux-nat.c,
removing headers that are no longer required and reordering some lines
so that both files roughly match.  Additionally, an unused definition
was removed from the middle of the #include list in i386-linux-nat.c.

I think you may have stopped looking before patch #6.  :-)

Please also keep in mind that gdbserver also has its own copy of
this code, and on the gdbserver side, we also started out with i386 and
amd64 split in different files, and then they got merged:

Please look at the resulting x86-linux-nat.c, and gdbserver's
existing linux-x86-low.c, the interim steps.

I can't agree that this series went too far, on the contrary - gdbserver
has everything in the linux-x86-low.c file, while Gary only moved the truly
shared code.  That's a fine incremental step IMNSHO.

The resulting #ifdefery quite reasonable, IMNSHO -- it'd be bad if there
were lots of different combinations of symbols we'd have to #ifdef on,
but there's really only a few #ifdef __x86_64__.  So if it's
spaghetti, it's still dry, raw, straight and neatly lined up
in the package.  :-)

As for naming, I suggested x86 myself.  I think x86 for shared 32-bit/64-bit
code, is quite an established convention itself.  It's what we already use
in gdbserver, and at least glibc and the Linux kernel use x86 for shared
code too.  E.g.:

 $ ls glibc/src/sysdeps/ | grep 86
 i386
 x86
 x86_64

I'd _really_, _really_ love to see this go forward (really), and reduce
the amount of places one has to touch when hacking on watchpoint stuff.
and when adding new target descriptions, etc., from 3 places, to 2 places.

that just recently still had to touch 3 places with the same code.
And going forward, I'd like to reduce that to 1 place only, even.

Please take a look at the resulting code past patch #5, I believe you'll

Ah, I found one bit where there's more #ifdefery than necessary.
So the spaghetti did catch some moisture.  :-)

Gary, please compare your resulting x86_linux_read_description
with gdbserver's x86_linux_read_description.  Notice how it
has fewer #ifdef blocks.  Could you rework your version of the
function in that direction please?

In hindsight the "Merge {i386,amd64}_linux_read_description" patch
is pretty ugly.  I'll rework it as per Pedro's suggestion elsewhere
in this thread.

Regarding the naming convention, there's a problem on the GDB
side (as opposed to gdbserver) in that "i386" is overloaded.
In some places it means "i386 and amd64" and in other places
it means "i386 (not amd64)".  This makes things difficult to
understand, so I've adopted the gdbserver's convention where
"x86" means "i386 and x86_64" and "i386" means "i386 (not amd64)".
