Right.
Andrew, I'm sorry to discourage you, but i18n cannot be done this way,
as translators will be unable to do anything useful with these bits
and pieces in any language that is sufficiently different from
English.

The proper way is like you said: gather the text into more or less
complete sentences or phrases. See my other message for more details.
