To get back to the issue at hand:
Daniel B., if you can tweak the Dwarf expression evaluator into a form
that Uli is willing to incorporate into his libdwarf, then that's a
pretty good test of its indpendence from GDB's internals, in my view.
Actually changing GDB to use (anybody's) libdwarf is a whole separate
project --- it could be worth pursuing, but it's not our (or at least
my) top priority.
