[PATCH 0/2] Fixes and tests related to new boxed hint startup text

Merged the first two patches from V1.  Here are the second two patches
rebased.

In v2:

  - Resolved conflicts with an upstream patch that touched the same area.

  - Work around a regression in debuginfod tests caused by changing
    get_chars_per_line returning unsigned.
