The explanation in the first message in this thread is the kind of thing that
fits perfectly in the GDB Internals manual. If you don't have the time or
inclination to add the text there, I can do it.
But in the long run IMHO we want to start a tradition of creating patches to
gdbint.texinfo for this kind of "plumbing" work. :^)
