I *have* raised a concern about breaking HPUX:

HPUX was building fine until the very recent removal of 
deprecated_registers (for which i have a patch that is being tested at 
the moment). MichaelC posts test results for hpux somewhat regularly...
while the results are not fantastic, it is still working for people who
use it.....

We can discuss changes required to fix the hpux target, but let's not
assume that hpux support will be gone in the next release (which is
what's currently in the NEWS file...)
