I went through 60% of the diff before I gave up. That first 60% looked
good to me. Given that it's relatively mechanical, and if you tested it
and found no difference, I think we can assume that the rest is OK too.
Thanks for doing this,

This fails for me:
set language asm^M
Warning: the current language does not match this frame.^M
(gdb) FAIL: gdb.base/setshow.exp: set language asm

Hmmm... well I'm prepared to revert that line, but I'm puzzled
as to why this output should appear for you and not for me.
I presume your arch is cell, whereas I tested on x86. But this
message comes from arch-neutral language.c, and AFAICT should only
appear on the command "show language", not "set language".
Can you see something that I'm missing?
Michael

Well, I'm seeing the message on x86 as well. In fact, it does
not originate from language.c, but from this piece of code at
the end of top.c:execute_command:
/* Warn the user if the working language does not match the
language of the current frame. Only warn the user if we are
actually running the program, i.e. there is a stack. */
/* FIXME: This should be cacheing the frame and only running when
the frame changes. */
if (has_stack_frames ())
{
flang = get_frame_language ();
if (!warned
&& flang != language_unknown
&& flang != current_language->la_language)
{
printf_filtered ("%s\n", lang_frame_mismatch_warn);
warned = 1;
}
}
Not sure why this different for you ...
Bye,
Ulrich

Actually, this is even weirder: if I try this manually,
just starting gdb on the setshow test case, and running:
uweigand@br8ermyc:~/fsf/gdb-head-build/gdb/testsuite/gdb.base$ ../../gdb ./setshow

16 int i = 1;
(gdb) set language asm
Warning: the current language does not match this frame.
I'm seeing the warning.
But if I run the whole testcase under DejaGNU, it passes, and the log
does *not* show the message ... I don't quite understand what's
going on here.

Aha! I see the same thing. That's comforting, anyway.
But you said that you got a testsuite fail?

Yes, on spu-elf. When running the manual test, I see the
warning both on i386-linux and on spu-elf. When running
the automated testsuite, I see no warning on i386-linux
(and thus no fail), but I do see the warning on spu-elf
(resulting in a fail).

FYI in the testcase the inferior is no loner running when `set language asm' is
entered. There is preceding:
(gdb) run^M
Starting program: .../gdb.base/setshow foo bar blup baz bubble^M
foo bar blup baz bubble ^M
Program exited normally.^M
(gdb) PASS: gdb.base/setshow.exp: passing args

Jan

Ah, that would explain it! This part of setshow.exp:
# Don't test if we can't pass args or if we're using a stub.
if { ![target_info exists use_gdb_stub] && ![target_info exists noargs] } {
#test passing args
gdb_test "cont" "Continuing.*" "continuing"
delete_breakpoints
gdb_test "run" "Starting program:.*foo bar blup baz bubble.*" "passing args"
}
is skipped on spu-elf because we cannot pass command line arguments
(well, at least it's not set up that way).
However, it seems to me that this is still a bug: I don't really think the
intention was that the remaining checks are to be executed on a running
inferior on some targets, and on a exited inferior on others ...

Ulrich

I'm reverting that line of change, as attached.
