Ah yeah, oops.
This is also a bit depressing:

Basically we'd need some wrapper. Or have to import the gnulib "c32"
module. Which I guess we could do, but that's the "ICU-style" route I
was hoping to avoid.
I'm pretty wary of using more of gnulib, given how fussy it's been in
the past. I sometimes fantasize about removing it from the tree.
OTOH if the gnulib module isn't too painful, maybe it would let us get
rid of our home-grown wchar wrapper stuff.
gnulib also has "mbswidth" which maybe we could use instead.
