Hi,
Since 2001 the GDB project uses the drawing of an archer fish as its
logo. The drawing was made by Jamie Guinan, who scanned it into a JPG
file. That image is currently used on all the GDB web pages.
I've created an SVG version of that drawing and used it for my last GNU
Tools Cauldron slides. Here's a slightly improved version. Would this
be of interest? If so, I might be able to provide a patch for the GDB
web site, not sure how to commit it though.

I could help with the import, since I have write access to
the GDB web pages. It looks like generally supported by most
web browsers, so if your SVG doesn't use any feature that's
too fancy, we should be able to just import it, right?

to point at/mention this contribution too.
Is this an Inkspace SVG? If so, I believe that it's a good
idea to export it as an Optimized SVG for the web.
If already optimized / stripped of custom extensions, it
may be desirable to also provide access to the original file
for future editing and adaptation, if Andreas is willing.
Do we need to say something about copyright/license?

It's already optimized. Yes, I can provide the Inkscape version as
well. I'll add it to the patch.

Since the SVG is strongly based on the original drawing,
it seems to me that we can not choose the license independently. The
original fish is licensed as "CC BY-SA 3.0 US":
http://www.bluebutton.com/misc/archer.comment
So I assume that the SVG version has to be licensed in the same way. In
my patch I'll update the "mascot" page with the licensing information
and a link to the license
(https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/us/).

Thanks, that would be helpful. For your convenience, here's a patch for
the web site. It replaces all of the logo images by the SVG version and
updates the mascot page.

The "mascot" page contains a link to the mascot discussion on the GDB
mailing list. In one of the thread's mails Jamie Guinan provided his
archer fish logo:

That mail points to a web page where Jamie had placed the logo:

And that page contains a link to the license. (BTW, I found it curious

Hm, if I understand the license terms of CC BY-SA 3.0 US correctly, I
should be able to upgrade the license of my derivative work to CC BY-SA
4.0. Sounds like that would be preferable?

I think so, yes. If nothing else, it will allow us to avoid asking
the FSF lawyers about this.

Note that:
- we've been using the original image with CC BY-SA 3 for
many years, so that would not be a new problem.
- the website is not GPL, AFAIK. All pages end with:
"Verbatim copying and distribution of this entire article is permitted
in any medium, provided this notice is preserved."
But in any case, I agree that it's good to upgrade the license to
avoid questions if we ever want to combine it with GPLv3 sources.
