I noticed that my message offering to moderate the list appeared in
the archives and then disappeared. I guess some filter is operating.

Sigh, I'll just wait and see what happens.

It wasn't a filter, the archives are a bit broken. Check the mbox
file and you will probably see your post.

I believe that the FSF (you may wan't to sit down before continuing)
recently implemented spam filtering on these mailing lists.

Felix Lee asks about gnu.gdb.bug:

If you look carefully, you will notice that the 'gnu.gdb.bug' newsgroup
and 'bug-gdb' mailing list are administered by one entity, whereas
the gdb bug database and the spam-protected 'gdb' mailing list are
actually hosted on the web servers of a different entity.

There is a nontrivial entity-entity relationship and that probably has
a lot to do with the continued existence of the gnu.gdb.bug.

I have been planning to volunteer to moderate gnu.gdb.bug. It's a
mailman list, and it's easy to set up mailman lists so that all mail
from people not on a whitelist must be approved before distribution.
That kills the spam dead, at the cost of some latency before posts go out.

yeah, so is there any reason for it to stay around? how
about just delete it, or delete mentions of it?

Most of the traffic is on gdb@sources.redhat.com.

Occasionally there is a legitimate message on gnu.gdb.bug,
but it's about 90% spam these days.

so is the newsgroup alive? it's mentioned on

   http://sources.redhat.com/gdb/mailing-lists/

but it seems to be entirely spam or harassment, and the
contents at Google and at the mail.gnu.org archive don't
seem to match.
