Since we're talking about the transition to Autoconf 2.5x, I've
started a cleanup of the various configure.in files in GDB. The idea
is to make the new configure.in files compatible with both Autoconf
2.13 and Autoconf 2.5x (where x=3 for now, since that's the version of
Autoconf that's installed on my FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE-p2 system that I
use to hack on). In the process I try to modernize the files as much
as possible, such that the differences between the files and a true
Autoconf 2.5x configure.ac will be minimal.
Attached is a patch that takes a stab at testsuite/configure.in.
Processing this file with Autoconf 2.53 provokes the following
warning:
configure.in:114: warning: AC_CONFIG_SUBDIRS: you should use literals
which unfortunately is unavoidable.
Since the patch is a wee bit unreadable, here's the new configure.in verbatim:
# -*- Autoconf -*-
# Process this file with autoconf to produce a configure script.

No objections, but: do you think it's possible to eliminate the need to
configure in each individual subdir? It's moderately annoying, and I
don't think we need it. About the only thing we use it for now is for
"make clean" to clean up the testsuite directory.

The autoconf 2.5x manual, in node Subdirectories, describes the right
way to do it, namely, place AC_CONFIG_SUBDIRS within the conditional
that determines whether to configure a sub-directory. It even
explains why it warns (so that configure --help=recursive can know of
all sub-directories, without having to evaluate the conditionals).

I'm sure the majority of those configure scripts can be avoided.
Creating the Makefiles in the subdirectories from the configure script
in the testsuite directory is no problem. So unless someone objects,
I'll start getting rid of the unneeded configure scripts once my
initial cleanup of testsuite/configure.in is checked in.

I always figured they were there to create the testsuite/gdb.*
directories in $(objdir) at configure time, otherwise when
check-gdb is run there isn't a place for compiled test binaries
to be placed.
