The curses library check in configure.in looks for initscr, which is
also provided by termcap in several implementations. This causes the
existing curses check to not link in a separate curses library which may
be needed for other curses functionality. This patch adds an explicit
check for some more curses symbols.

Does the TUI code in GDB actually use wattr_on or any symbols that
reference wattr_on? If not, we could defeat curses implementations
that don't have wattr_on, but are otherwise good enough for what GDB
needs.

this comes from box_win(). there's a call to wattron that is getting
translated into wattr_on().
actually, the problem seems to be:
on this particular HPUX system where i'm doing the gdb build,
there are both ncurses headers and native HPUX curses headers. The
include search path for GCC is such that the build
picks up the ncurses curses.h header which does the wattron() ->
wattr_on() translation. :-(
so i guess my fix is not really correct; we should make configure use
the correct header. But how?

Your idea might still be correct, if we could find a symbol that isn't
in termcap library (nor in any other library) and isn't converted by
some preprocessor macro.

in my case i only had those two missing symbols in the link -- wattr_on
and wattr_off....
i think what we need to do is to do a test with wattron (no _ -- which
is what is actually used in the code) but make sure the test is done
with #include "gdb_curses.h". I can't figure out how to do that with
autoconf though...

We had a similar discussion about alpha*-dec-osf5.1 recently.
I think the right approach is to use 'curses' by default and
let the user specify a --with-curses option if their curses library
is located somewhere else. Perhaps --with-curses-header=...
and --with-curses-library=....
configure will never be smart enough to distinguish all the cases
of which curses library is installed and whether it is correctly
installed. Plus there are cases where the user actually wants to
specify their own specific curses library (like I build ncurses 5.4
from source and I want to use that).
Daniel J pointed out that one can override CPPFLAGS and LDFLFAGS
to get this effect, and I filed a PR that this mechanism does
not work.

If users of a specific platform need _always_ to use --with-curses
to get GDB to compile on that platform, then I think we should do
something for that specific platform.
In other words, I think that --with-curses should only be used for
systems where curses is installed in non-standard places, which is
not the case here, AFAIU.
