Well, there goes that theory :-(

Yes, or SH bug.

Using current sources, can you isolate this down to a single 
subdirectory and then use `sh -x' on it?

Hmm, can you also try configuring in a separate directory vis:

cd /tmp
/path/to/configure ....

it might be that.
