You can do:
$ sh GDB/src/config.guess
i686-pc-linux-gnu
so it sounds like, for you, it isn't returning valid output. If that's
the problem then the place to report this is:
http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/config
once the master config.guess has been fixed the local version can be
updated.
