Gnats

I was looking through gnats a little bit today, and I noticed a number
of semi-bogus PRs -- things that were fixed, duplicates, whatever

I would fix this but I have insufficient permissions.  Would anybody
mind if I upped my permissions and did a pass to close the obviously
fixed things?

Or, someone volunteer and I will send a to-close list.

Not at all; I gather you can.  In fact as far as I can see you already
should be able to.  Sure you got the right password?  You have almost
the only changed password in the entire gnats access file, and it
looks suspiciously like a typo.

In related news, who thinks we should bite the bullet and migrate to
the sourceware bugzilla installation?

Perhaps I don't use the current bugs database enough to see the problems
that come with it. But I think whether the switch will be useful or not
depends on how much resources we would have available to monitor the
contents of the database. Right now, it feel like very little effort is
spent using the current bugs database, and so a switch wouldn't bring
much benefit.

The gnats web interface has some annoying problems, that's for sure.
Also, some simple operations cannot be done.  For instance, you can't
easily mark a bug as a duplicate.

Today I went through 1/2 to 2/3 of the bugs, looking for dead stuff.
There was less than I thought, but still a bit.  Also there are a few
relatively straightforward patches that have been sitting there
unviewed -- not to mention bigger, useful stuff like the 'try/except'
patch.

I agree that changing bug systems will only have a minimal effect, if
any, on this sort of thing.  So, consider this a plea for a bit more
attention to the bug database from maintainers :)

FWIW, the exact same thing was true with GCC when it was using GNATS.
No GCC dev's used it or paid attention, etc.
Within 2 months of the switch, there were even dedicated people
monitoring the database that came out of the woodwork (andrew pinski,
for example), and developers were using it.
It turns out if you have tools that suck, people don't use them :)

When I was first signed up to gnats I tried to change my password and 
found no way to do it. :(

I wasn't that bothered at the time, but I suspect you just told anybody 
who knows what the default is, exactly what every password in the system is.

To be frank, I don't care; changes go out to a mailing list, and if we
have problems we can restore.  It seems vanishingly unlikely :-)
