I missed maint print registers after seeing the
raw-registers subcommand.  Good to know.  Thanks.

I didn't know about the 'x' response but I see it in
fetch_register_using_p() in remote.c and sure enough,
that's what makes it happy!  (An error, empty response
or '0' response certainly don't make it happy.)
