Carlo is right. ld is changed to work around

The problem is gdb can't deal with discarded line info in different
CUs.

I still don't get this.  "gdb can't deal with discarded line info"
sounds like gdb should be changed, not ld.

Why was ld changed?  The change is incorrect, too, as now turns out.
