No rule to make target `gcc'

I've just checked out the HEAD sources from CVS (about 2:00 UTC on
Dec. 5) and the compilation fails this way:

I checked out 'src', then ran ./configure with only a --prefix option,
then ran make.


My system:

    RedHat        7.2
    gcc           2.96-112.7.2
    glibc         2.2.4-31
    libstdc++     2.96-112.7.2
    libtool       1.4.2-7.ximian.1

'which gcc' returns /usr/bin/gcc;
'/usr/bin/gcc --version' returns 2.96.
