I happened to notice while looking at Makefile.in recently that not
all the obsolete stuff in there is marked as OBSOLETE. The one bit
that I noticed was the special compilation rule for z8k-tdep.o; there
might be others.

Yep. Have a look at the "evil" script:

which I'll (now that you've reminded me :-) run over Makefile.in.
