I'm afraid I don't like this approach either.

I think quoting expressions is very ugly.  Nothing else in gdb does
this.  Also, AFAIK it breaks completion.  Furthermore, this
implementation ignores the possibility of quotes embedded in an
expression.

Please choose some other approach.
