GDB 18.1 release update - 2026-09-21

Hi everyone,

Quick update on the 18.1 release.  The current plan is still to make the
release on:

    Fri Sep 25 2026

The biggest risk is gdb/33447, this has been through a couple of rounds
of review and update already.  There's a risk that this will need
additional updates.  The sooner this patch is reviewed, the better.

   This issue is considered NICE TO HAVE, and I'm not currently planning
   to hold the release for it.

   This issue effects Solaris, and has existed in GDB for a while if I
   understand things correctly (i.e. many releases now).

   It's not clear if there will be another version of this patch.  I'll
   take a look at this today and see if I can post something that might
   be useful.

Added Since the Last Update:

 * gdb/34646 -  [gdb] FAIL: gdb.arch/i386-pkru.exp: OS generated core file: read pkru register

   This is fallout from the patch merged to fix gdb/34561.  It's not
   really a regression, but is a pre-existing issue being exposed by a
   new test that was added.  The pre-existing issue isn't new, so isn't
   something we'd want to hold the release for.

   I posted a patch that changes the new FAIL into an XFAIL:

   If this is approved then I'll merge this into master and
   gdb-18-branch, and then we can remove the 18.1 milestone from this
   bug.
