Oh, you are right. I configured vim to count the line chars instead of the
virtual column number. I've adjusted the statusline of my .vimrc to prevent
such issues in the future:
-set statusline=%f\ %m\ \|\ %l\/%L\,%c\ %=%P
+set statusline=%f\ %m\ \|\ %l\/%L\,%c\%V\ %=%P
