Unfortunately this is not true:
1998-10-12 Jason Molenda (jsm@bugshack.cygnus.com)
* Makefile.in (AWK): Unused; remove.
Awk is used by the machine-specific makefile fragment for the Hurd.
See `gdb/config/i386/i386gnu.mh'.
