It was documented but never implemented.  All we did was drop it from
the docs.

If ptype works for you, I guess that is the way :-)

Otherwise it is just open: http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=8143
I guess you could write a patch to implement -symbol-type.
