You could try this patch:
ftp://ftp.shout.net/pub/users/mec/gdb/ctor-dtor-base.patch
You'll need to start with a more recent version of gdb than gdb 5.1.1,
like gdb 6.1.1 or gdb 6.2. Read the doco (which is useful anyways),
apply the patch, build gdb, and see if you like it.
