Did you try the way of
file (before using `target remote')
or
set architecture
? It works for me on x86_64 debugging x86_64 target (as it expects i386).
set architecture i386:x86_64
target remote localhost:1234
[ works ]
Still sure some bit-size autodetecting patch by Daniel would be the best.
