Hi Robert,

This rings a bell.  This symptom indicates that you are using a Solaris
version of make and it doesn't support VPATH properly.

Try using Gnu Make (gmake).

SunOS make probably works if you configure and build in the source
directory, although that is not recommended and may have other problems.

Also, gdb 5.2 is released, you might want to be building that.
