I have only now found out how you intend to use the scripts, for example by: ./configure --with-system-gdbinit=/usr/share/gdb/system-gdbinit/elinos.py or ./configure --with-system-gdbinit=/usr/share/gdb/system-gdbinit/wrs-linux.py It makes sense to me now. Or one could also do: ./configure --with-system-gdbinit=/etc/gdbinit /etc/gdbinit: source /usr/share/gdb/system-gdbinit/elinos.py OK, I see this is really orthogonal to the "source" command wildcard feature.
