A lot of the modifications in the second patch seem to be fixes to better
conform to the GDB coding standards, so I found it easier to read both
patches merged into 1.  For anyone else who would want to review them
as one patch, here it is...

(I will review this patch is no one else does, but it'll take me a few
days)
