I dearly hope that this will be the last time you need to do this.
The patches to introduce automake dependency tracking are sitting
here; it's just that I tested them only with new automake, so they
are waiting for the move to newer autotools (which in turn I still
kinda hope to wait for Autoconf 2.64).  I *think* however that they
should be fine with 1.9.6, too, so if you like I can post them,
that would at least allow them to be tried out.

(I'm also travelling until next weekend, so I'm hesitant to apply
them and then be unresponsive for a few days.)
