A colleague is at present evaulating gdb in ecos and it lead to some confusion. I use standard(?) gdb 4.17 on the host side with the serial protocol described in remote.c. However, the gdb-stub within ecos defines a different protocol, e.g. Hc-1 is obsolete according to my colleague. Do you intend to develop gdb in another direction from 4.17 on? Is there any standard gdb x.yz? Is there any documentation on the differences between different 4.17 implementations?
